By Hearty's Stop | Shopping Dil Se 💛

If there is one style of ethnic wear that has stood the test of time — worn by queens, celebrities and everyday women alike — it is Chikankari.

Delicate. Timeless. Breathtakingly beautiful.

At Hearty's Stop, Chikankari is one of our most loved collections — and once you understand what makes it so special, you'll understand why. 💛

What is Chikankari?

Chikankari is a traditional form of hand embroidery that originated in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh — also known as the City of Nawabs. The word "Chikan" comes from the Persian word meaning embroidery on muslin.

This art form is believed to have been introduced by Mughal Empress Nur Jahan in the 17th century — and has been passed down through generations of skilled artisans in Lucknow ever since.

What makes Chikankari truly special is that every piece is hand embroidered by skilled craftswomen — making each outfit a unique work of art.

How is Chikankari Made?

The process of creating a Chikankari garment is long, detailed and requires incredible skill:

Step 1 — Design printing The design is first printed on the fabric using a wooden block dipped in temporary ink.

Step 2 — Hand embroidery Skilled craftswomen then embroider the design by hand using a needle and fine thread. This can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on the complexity.

Step 3 — Washing The garment is washed to remove the printed ink, revealing the clean, delicate embroidery.

Step 4 — Finishing The finished piece is carefully ironed, checked for quality and prepared for sale.

One single Chikankari suit can take 15 to 30 days to complete by hand — which is why authentic Chikankari is always special.

Types of Chikankari Stitches

There are over 30 different stitches used in Chikankari embroidery! Here are the most popular:

Tepchi — The most basic running stitch, used to create floral and vine patterns

Bakhia — A shadow work stitch done from the wrong side of the fabric, creating a beautiful shadow effect visible from the front

Murri — A French knot stitch that creates tiny raised dots — used for flower centers and borders

Phanda — Tiny millet-shaped knots that create texture and dimension

Jali — An open lattice work that creates a mesh-like pattern — absolutely stunning when held up to light

Zanzeera — A chain stitch used to outline and border designs

Best Fabrics for Chikankari

Chikankari looks beautiful on many fabrics:

Georgette — The most popular choice. Lightweight, flowy and elegant — perfect for occasions and festivals.

Cotton — Perfect for daily wear. Breathable, comfortable and easy to maintain.

Lawn — Soft and lightweight — ideal for summers.

Organza — Sheer and beautiful — creates a stunning festive look.

How to Care for Chikankari

Chikankari is delicate — here's how to care for it:

  • Always hand wash in cold water with mild detergent
  • Never wring or twist — gently squeeze out water
  • Dry in shade — direct sunlight can fade the fabric
  • Iron inside out on low heat to protect the embroidery
  • Store carefully — fold gently or hang to avoid creasing the embroidery
